Kantamanto Fire Relief – January 2, 2025
On January 2, 2025, a devastating fire broke out in sections of Kantamanto Market in Accra, destroying hundreds of stalls and storage spaces and disrupting the livelihoods of many traders, tailors, carriers, and market workers. As one of the world’s largest second-hand clothing markets, Kantamanto supports thousands of people who depend on the daily circulation of garments for income and survival.
In response, The Revival Earth Organization mobilised to support affected members of the market community. Working closely with traders, market leaders, and local volunteers, we helped raise awareness, coordinate emergency support, and mobilise resources for those who lost inventory, tools, and working spaces.
Our efforts focused on providing immediate relief while supporting longer-term recovery. This included fundraising to assist traders in rebuilding their businesses, distributing essential supplies, and collaborating with partners to strengthen infrastructure and safety within the market.
The fire was a tragic event, but it also revealed the resilience of the Kantamanto community. Within days, traders and workers began rebuilding their spaces and returning to work. The Revival remains committed to supporting the community as recovery continues and to helping build a more resilient future for the market.
The recovery of Kantamanto is an ongoing collective effort. The Revival continues to work alongside traders, artisans, and partners to support rebuilding, strengthen safety, and protect the livelihoods that sustain this vital market ecosystem. We welcome collaborations and support from individuals, institutions, and organisations who believe in building a more resilient and equitable future for the people of Kantamanto.
Kantamanto Signage Renovation
We joined forces with local artists in Kantamanto to embark on a transformative project aimed at revitalizing an iconic signage in Kantamanto Market. This collaboration merges creativity, artistry, and community spirit to breathe new life into a symbol of this vibrant marketplace. Through artistic expression and upcycling, the project endeavors to not only beautify the signage but also to convey a powerful message about the potential for renewal and sustainable practices within the fashion industry. The project's significance lies not only in its visual impact but also in its capacity to inspire a shift in perceptions regarding waste and fashion, fostering a sense of unity and hope within the Kantamanto community.
